Transform your furniture with fresh upholstery

“I love it but I’ve fallen out of love with it.”

Old, worn and outdated upholstery with broken springs and saggy padding has no place in anyone’s home. But there’s no need to send it to the tip. It’s easy to update a much loved piece of furniture with new upholstery.

Since training with The Ministry of Upholstery in Manchester, we’ve transformed a variety of domestic furniture for happy clients, often combining new upholstery with fresh paintwork or restructuring as part of an upcycling project or a bespoke build commission.

Create a stylish look with upholstery

Adding an upholstered element to your room with a cushion or seat pad adds style and interest and can really freshen up the look. Take a look at some of our projects.

I would highly recommend Matthew at The Odd Thing.
Matthew pointed us in the direction of some online fabric sellers and we quickly made decisions about the colours and style we wanted. We had the fire retardant fabric sent directly to The Odd Thing which made life much easier.
We are over the moon with the end result. It has really pulled together the space and complements the décor beautifully! As the cottage is so crooked the geometric design works really well and the piping and attention to detail are fantastic!

Is my furniture suitable for re-upholstery?

Re-upholstery is ideal for furniture you love but have fallen out of love with. It might be a vintage rocking chair, a sentimental heirloom piece, or something that fits perfectly into your home that you would struggle to replace. Re-upholstery is an investment to prolong the life of furniture and is especially popular with classic furniture brands like Parker Knoll and Ercol.

Types of upholstery and re-upholstery

  • Window seat cushions

  • Scatter cushions

  • Rocking chair

  • Bench seat

  • Dining chairs

  • Armchairs

  • Chaise longue

  • Headboard

  • Cocktail chair

  • Footstools

Matthew has transformed my boring beige armchair into a thing of beauty and a joy forever. What a talent!

Choosing the perfect upholstery fabric

There are many things to consider when choosing fabric - colour, pattern, texture, material, durability, fire safety and, crucially, whether it’s suitable for upholstery.

We’re happy to provide guidance and share a list of reputable websites where you can browse specialist upholstery fabrics. We’d recommend ordering some sample swatches, not just to check colour and feel, but also to look at in different lights. Colour change from day to night can be both subtle and dramatic. Take your time and choose something you can live with!
